He emigrated to Melbourne, Australia and married Hilda Gertrude Wilson and they had two children. The first Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1931. He went on to found thirty-six schools around the world. In 1942 he moved to Havelock North and bought the large Quaker-built house Swarthmoor and renamed it Peloha (for Peace, Love and Harmony).
